Children and Young People
There are a wide range of agencies working on young people's issues in the neighbourhood. Below are some of the priorities that Community Counts are focusing on this year.
Key Priorities 2008 - 2009
And here are some of our priorities for the coming 12 months...
- Development of youth involvement in open spaces
- Development of parental involvement in Children's Centres
- Neighbourhood Play Plan
Young People's Involvement in Parry and St James Park
In our Resident Survey this year, 42% of residents told us that they thought the availability of activities for teenagers is an issue that most needs improving. Now young people can have their say! Community Counts are working with the County Council's Youth Services team to enable young people who live near St James Park and Parry Field to be involved in planning what happens in these open spaces.
Helping Young People access Employment and Training
Do you know a young person who is not in education, employment or training? Could they benefit from training to enable them to get the job they want? Community Counts are working with Gloucestershire College's Centre for Business and Workplace Development and local community organisations such as the Friendship Cafe / Gymnation and White City Adventure Playground to develop courses aimed at helping young people get the training and skills they need to access the jobs they want.
The target group for this work is young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs). The plan is for the community organisations to co-ordinate and deliver a series of short courses, which will provide young people with basic accredited qualifications in different areas. It is hoped that courses will include the Community Sports Leader Award and the Take 5 for Play course, as well as certificates in Child Protection and First Aid. There will be ongoing work to look at other potential areas of learning by asking young people what they are interested in.
