An independent community partnership for Barton & Tredworth!

Tuesday 25th November 2008

Residents of Barton and Tredworth are committed to improving their neighbourhood and have formed a new community partnership to help them do this.  Over 40 residents met last Tuesday to reach a decision on the type of community partnership that the neighbourhood should have.  There was healthy debate at the meeting but the majority view was that an independent partnership should be formed which has close ties to Gloucester City Council's Neighbourhood Partnership team and local voluntary and community sector organisations.  The independent partnership will also have support from a part-time development worker for a year.

There is a lot of interest from residents for this new partnership and over 20 residents have already volunteered to be involved in setting up the neighbourhood partnership.

Any resident of Barton and Tredworth is welcome to join the community partnership.  If you would like more information please contact Sylvia Webster or Vera Li from Gloucester City Council's Neighbourhood Partnerships Team on 396975.

A Neighbourhood Voice for Barton & Tredworth

Friday 17th October 2008

Community Counts is coming to an end in January 2009.  One of the most important things we've been thinking about over the last few months has been how to make sure that all the good work that residents have been doing with us in the neighbourhood is continued and that it's joined up with all the other resident-led work on influencing services and activities in the area.

In other parts of Gloucester the city council has been supporting residents to set up Neighbourhood Partnerships to make sure residents can work together to get the things done in their area that they feel are important.  We now have a possibility of having a Neighbourhood Partnership, or a different sort of neighbourhood structure, in Barton and Tredworth.

So, what kind of neighbourhood structure would suit residents in Barton and Tredworth?  To help start exploring this question we organised an initial meeting of residents in September.  Thirty local people, all of whom are already active in making change in the neighbourhood, came along to this meeting.  From this meeting it was clear that there are committed, experienced residents in Barton and Tredworth who want to continue to play an active role in their neighbourhood.

Those residents that attended this initial meeting asked to open out the discussion and hold a larger event where residents can decide on one of the preferred options for a neighbourhood structure.

This next event is on Tuesday 18th November 2008

5.30pm-8.30pm

Anglo Asian Centre, 91 Barton Street, Gloucester

All residents are welcome and we'll be asking those that attend to vote on their preferred option about the way forward and ask for volunteers interested in developing the option.  The meeting will start at 5.30pm and finish at about 8.30pm, with light refreshments available.  Please let Isabel know on 554408 if you will be coming along.

Barton & Tredworth: Your Neighbourhood Your Voice...

Monday 22nd September 2008

Community Counts is coming to an end in January 2009 and this comes at the same time as many neighbourhoods in Gloucester are developing neighbourhood partnerships.

Community Counts have started discussions with community groups and active residents in the neighbourhood about the next step for residents of Barton & Tredworth so that they can continue to influence decisions that affect them locally.

More news on this important step for Barton & Tredworth will be coming soon...

Fun Day a Great Success!

Friday 1st August 2008

Young people from Parry celebrate a successful Parry Fun DayThe sun shone and the crowds turned up to enjoy Parry Field Fun Day last Saturday.  The day was a brilliant success with activities for all ages, from a Gladiators-style duel to cream teas.

A group of young people from the Parry area organised the event, with support from their Youth Worker and other local organisations.  Local celebrity, Martin Kirby, opened the event and commented: "What impressed me the most was the way that so many local people supported the event and best of all, that so many of the volunteer helpers were teenagers from Tredworth ... demonstrating that it's the minority who give kids a bad name."

Also celebrated at the Fun Day were the new Multi-Use Games Area which is now finished and can be used by anyone, and the play area for 4-12 year olds which will be finished within the next few weeks.  For more information about what's happening on Parry Field call Mary Jennings at Community Counts on 554405.

All the Fun of the Field!

Friday 11th July 2008

Come and join in the fun at Parry Field Fun Day on Saturday 26th July where there will be fun and games to suit all ages.  If you're feeling energetic why not challenge a friend to a Gladiators-style duel or join in with tag rugby?  Or if you're feeling creative, try out some circus skills or have a henna tattoo.  For those who like more traditional games, there's the bouncy castle, coconut shy, tombola and cake stall.  And when you've worked up an appetite you can enjoy something from the BBQ or a cream tea with freshly baked scones.

The idea for the Fun Day came from a group of young people who live in and around the Parry area.  They are working with the Youth Service to try to put something back into the community after a period of anti-social behaviour.  Sonny, 17, and Ricardo, 16, commented: "We've had a lot of bad comments from local people recently, some we don't deserve.  A lot of the problem in the past is that we've been bored and had nothing to do.  So come along to the Fun Day and get to know who we really are, we'll be the ones in the yellow t-shirts!"

Residents can bring their bike along to Parry Field Fun Day to have free cycle lights fitted, and get it checked out and postcoded by a police officer too.  There will be tennis and tag rugby with qualified coaches and the day will close with a spectacular dancing display.

All this is happening at Parry Field, off Parry Road, on Saturday 26th July from 12 noon until 4pm.  As well as local young people and the Youth Service, other organisations that have been involved in organising the Fun Day include Tredworth Estate Tenants and Residents Association (TETRA), Gloucester City Homes, Gloucester City Council, Safer Communities Police Team and Community Counts.  For more information about the Fun Day call Mary Jennings at Community Counts on 554405.

Monday 16th June 2008

What could your community group do with £1000?  Kickstart a new project?  Buy some much-needed equipment?  Organise a special event?

Community Chest grants of up to £1000 are waiting to be snapped up by community groups and organisations in Barton, Tredworth and White City.  Funding is for projects or activities that encourage people to get involved in a community event or build community confidence in some way.

A girl at Bartongate Children's Centre enjoying the new gardenChildren and parents at Bartongate Children's Centre have been enjoying some green-fingered fun after successfully applying for a Community Chest grant.  They have been busy creating a vegetable garden and digging patch in part of the outdoor play area of the centre and encouraging children, parents and volunteers to take part in digging, planting and growing fruit and vegetables.  Organiser Gail Johnson, deputy manager at the centre, commented: "We arranged for a tutor from Hartpury College to run some practical courses in gardening skills for parents and we're aiming to use the vegetables that we grow in a range of activities with children at the centre."

Community Chest grants are awarded to many different types of projects from football and dance, to community fun days and art projects.  Applications for the next round of Community Chest need to be in by Monday 30th June 2008.  For more details about Community Chest or to get an application form check out the page on this website; to chat about an idea you have call Community Counts on 554408.
